    Any hearing-impaired audiology students?

    Hi there,
I was wondering if there were any hearing-impaired students out there, and if so how are they getting on? I'd love to hear from you.

There was one in the begininng of our year who actually grew up deaf and used signing and then used bilateral hearing aids but sadly left the course at the start of our first year. It was so sad because we all admired and adored her ambition.

That's a shame. I wonder if there are many cases of deaf/hearing-impaired students dropping out for whatever reasons? And how many actually reach the qualified audiologist stage?

I have a hearing impairment and use bilateral hearing aids (which I have had for about 6yrs now) and am in my 3rd year placement of the degree. I get on okay-have a few problems with hearing the occasional patient and also with listening to hearing aids e.g for distortion but for things like this I use the testbox if I am unsure. On my placement which is my local hospital, I work with a hearing therapist who has been in the job for at least 30 yrs i would say, he has a BAHA and a hearing aid which he has had since he was young and he gets on fine-I think he's the same as me in that he just has difficulty hearing patients from time to time.

Thanks, that's really interesting. What do you do when you get a patient who is difficult to understand? And do you ever have problems with speech audiometry?

    I have a hearing loss

I have a hearing loss and am in my first year of the Au.D program at Texas Tech University. I get along fine. Of course it is hard to do WR and being able to tell if they got it right or not. Other than that things go fairly well. I have some trouble hearing the occasional foreign professor also. I think it's a good place to be if you do have a hearing loss because you can relate to your patient's like no other normal hearing person can!

I agree, thats part of the reason i took up audiology after my audiologist mentioned it when i was first fitting with hearing aids. Speech audiometry is one thing i havent done yet so im not sure on that one. I mainly have problems with occasional accents and more softly spoken people.

There was 1 student in my course who wears hearing aids, she also has an FM system which the lecturer hangs around his neck (the sound gets transmitted directly to her hearing aids). The student tends to sit at the front of the lecture room as it enhances her understanding to what is being said - as i noticed when talking to her that she lip reads too.

This student is a foundation student, hence she also works in an audiology departement as well as studying.

The student also gets the benefit of sitting her exams seperately, and i'm sure all universities do try to meet the special needs of their students.

I think its great that this student works and studies and i really admire her courage and friendliness, as she is happy to talk to people and not at all held back by her hearing loss.

I'm not to the point where I qualify for hearing aids yet but I do have high-frequency loss which affects my comprehension. I was given an FM system and I never go to class without it. I'm hoping I'm allowed the same treatment at my graduate school!
