I've had the same problem.....
I'm in second year and my parents still go around saying 'she's going to be an ear doctor!'
I generally say it's to do with the study of the ears, sometimes I do say it's like studying optometry only in optometry you concentrate on the eye and in audiology it's all about ears!
Hopefully in another 2-3 years audiology will become more widespread and people won't need to ask what on earth we're talking about!

Yeah I do enjoy audiology, I'm at Aston, which is a nice place...only it's too close to town....
First year was really good, and second year is a lot more work but I still enjoy audiology...

lol....tymp..omg..that sounds soo lame...haha...next time someone does that, just scream into their ear, so that their eardrum gets perforated (lol..i don't even know if that can happen but never mind) and than calmly say, "oh dear, i think you may require a vist to the audiologist".
hahaha..well dont get the wrong idea about me..im not violent (but i'll make one empathetic audiologist wont I? lol

oh by the way did you two have to do some boredom galore subject called PROFFESSIONAL STUDIES in your first year. arrrgh..here at ucl we do..its terrible cos it has absolutely no relevance to audiology what so ever. Its all for speech therapists..things like conversation repair and dialect study.

I think you will find that professional studies is in all four years. It is at manchester. We do study it with the speech language students too but at manchester they have done a reasonable job of making it more generic and audiology relevent.

I'm so slow
Yep I always get the old joke, even though i'm now in my 4th year.
"what are you studying?"
"Audiology"
"whats that?"
"Its to do with hearing and balance"
"What?"
"Its to do with hearing and balance"
"what?"..........
I just keep repeating myself until they say "no its a joke" and just say "oh!, your funny, ha ha!!" Seems to work well for me. Unfortunately I always seem to meet people who think they are very funny.
Must admit some people are genuinely interested in what i'm studying. I've found most patients are interested and ask me how I ended up doing this.
I think everyone finds Professional Studies the leasting interesting part of the degree. In our final year we cover CVs, Job applications, career paths etc so quite useful stuff. Especially since I apply for jobs in a month or 2.....

Out of habit, I still say, "I'm studying Audiology," but I've been trying to transition to just saying, "I'm studying hearing sciences," the first time, since it's still accurate and a lot easier to understand, plus it alludes to the fact that I'm going for research instead of clinical practice.
On another forum I visit, one person asked what you say when someone asks you, "Why?"
A responder commented, "Well, I wanted to pursue proctology but there weren't any openings."
I laughed, but it got better.
The next reply: "That's hard to believe. Proctology is predicated on openings!"
