I'm a 3rd BSc. I am interested to find out what other BSc 3rd year students have to do in this year (i.e. 3rd year)?
I know we all have to attend a placement and complete the national logbook...but I wonder what else? For example, whats the workload like in other universities. I'm at UCL and we have practical exams, case presentations and a portfolio which has to contain loads of case studies. What does your uni do?

third year is very interesting. it's actually alot of hard work because you have to be on the ball all the time and its abit of a shock to the system for people that have never really worked before like me! waking up so early-whats that all about? but i think its very good for us to go out and actually see what our lecture notes really mean. still its nice to take a break from submitting 2000 word essays.

i'm lucky because i'm in a very well equiped and well staffed department so i do get to see a variety of things weekly. i have found though now that we're about 5/6 months in, its easy to become a robot if you do the same thing all week. but i'm snapping out of that and finding that there's actually a hundred things i still don't know about hearing aid fittings that i should know for those rare cases. its easy to forget the majority of the lecture notes you've been studying for 2 years but i think tutorials in our placements really help big time because it makes much more sense when you see everything in action in the actual department. it also forces you to re-read lecture notes.

3rd yr has certainly been .............interesting! getting MUCH more than i bargained for!!!

i never imaged the logbook would prove to be such a pain or that i would have soooo many more questions than answers even at this late stage.

tutorials have been sparse so i will be tasking myself with making a list of all yr2 lecture notes that i need to have covered, come exam time.

it's v demanding but i do enjoy meeting with the patients, discussing and listening to their hearing diffs and then (sometimes) providing a solution.

it'll be worth it, i fink!

I'm in my third year and on my second six month placement. I am finding it really interesting picking up different tips from different people. Eg testing the loop system setting on the hearing aid by putting it next to a ticking watch.
I've found it really intersting seeing how different departments work in different situations eg when they have long waiting lists.

Hi, I'm a Placement Educator hosting students from Leeds and DeMontfort Universities. I'm doing an MSc in management as well and my current assignment is to look at the quality of training we provide as a placement.

I wanted to get some opinions about what makes a quality placement. If you reply, I will be using your information in my assignment but would not use any names or places, so you would be anonymous (except in this forum of course!)

So, can anyone provide me with examples of good quality (or bad) training placements and what made them good or bad? Thanks for your help!

    3rd year

I’m a 3rd year BSc Audiology student. I started placement in August 08 and it has been interesting. It’s helped me to put theory into practice and also given me an insight into a 9 to 5 job (which was a bit of a shock to the system to say the least!).

For the year I’ve got to do my 5 assessments (drs, fittings, reassessments, follow ups and repairs) and get the log book filled in. Plus for uni we’ve got to do a separate portfolio, which talks about everything we’ve got up to and we’ve got to give evidence to say we’ve fulfilled certain learning outcomes. Plus a seminar and review of a journal. We have to attend study days at uni too, once a month. It’s good to catch up with what everyone’s been up to.

Hi guys, has anyone had a placement at Dorchester Hospital, or Exeter? I'm trying to decide where I should take my placement and any feedback would be great!
