Genetic DNA Sequencing
In the last few months there have been what seems like a deluge of press releases by companies that produce equipment for DNA gene sequencing.
What is being promised are devices that can produce relatively quick and affordable genetic sequences for an individual.
The devices introduced include:
Illumina - HiSeq 2500
Ion Torrent from Life technologies - Ion Proton Sequencer
Oxford Nanopore - MinION and GridION
The race seems to be on to make cheaper and smaller devices, with the MinION being the size of a usb flash drive.
Due to these, gene sequencing may become a real and affordable option for many institutions. It may even become routine, as cost further reduce.
