Transition Service
Hi
We are looking into the our transition service and was just wondering what the average cut off age. i.e what age do they transfer from child to adult services.
Also the transition appiontment do they see a hearing therapist and audiologist or just one these professionals??
What do other departmetns do?? Does any know of a difinitive document on this subject?

Hi Kiki
The NDCS has a useful document, entitled 'Transition from paediatric to adult audiology services' and also a recent draft quality standards document, subtitled 'Guidelines for professionals working with deaf children and young people' (feel free to message me if you'd like me to email these- couldn't find the links)
We are currently updating our document too and the general advice seems to be that the 'cut-off' age should be when the child has left education, but only if this is practical. For example, if they are moving to a University out of the area, it may be simpler for them to transfer care to the local adult service, in order to access repairs etc. We plan to set out all of the options and discuss the best way forward with the patient.

Hello
Just to let everyone know that the NDCS's new Quality Standards in Transition Between Paediatric and Adult Audiology Services has just been published (and launched at BAA last month). They are a complete re-write rather than just an update so please recycle any copies of the 2005 version you may have. Can be downloaded here with additional information available here or ring the Helpline on 0808 800 8880 to order a free hard copy.
