Hi
has anyone made the transition from NHS Audiologist to hearing aid dispensor?
What are the advantages/disadvantages of this?
Any other comments welcome regarding this matter.
Thanks.
I moved overseas a couple of years ago after having worked in the NHS. I now work as a dispensor in a private clinic. Initially I had a few concerns about what it would be like working in the private sector (sales targets, how commercial pressure might be at odds with clinical judgement/best practise etc.), but I've actually found it to be a very positive experience and it turns out none of my concerns were justified.
I guess the main drawback is that the work is much less varied than you're likely to get working in the NHS - no paeds or vestibs. But then if your main interest is hearing aids and adult rehab then working in the private sector does give you the opportunity to work with a larger range of products & latest technology and if you get in with a good employer you might find it very enjoyable. And often the money's better too![]()
I can't really comment on dispensing in the UK though but I guess wherever you are there will be some organisations that are more client focussed and some that are more profit-driven and the best thing to do would be to ask people who work or who have worked in the places you're considering applying to.
